Berridale’s Aussie Patriots triumph in 2011 MDCA 6 a side Cricket
In a terrific day of cricket action on the Monaro last Sunday, the Aussie Patriots team from Berridale walked away with the 2011 MDCA 6 a side trophy. The Aussie Patriots team captained by Simon Freebody, went through the day undefeated toppling the Merimbula Knights in a tightly contested final. In front of the 12 teams and a healthy crowd of family and friends the Patriots secured victory keeping the trophy firmly in the Monaro Region for another year.
Highlights of the day included some strong junior performances from the Merimbula Knights under 18’s, the Berridale Post Young Guns and Cooma’s own Backyard Boys with great bowling from D.Swain and Z.Saddler in particular. The day even saw the reintroduction of the MDCA Australia Day sprint which was a lot of fun with kids and spectators joining in. In the seniors sides competition the highly fancied Toyota Cup All Stars struggled against the likes of the Patriots and Wolfies Wobblers whilst in the other division the Merimbula Knights first grade and the Sorry About That team had two wins apiece and had to be split on run rate differential.
Some big hitting, tight bowling and good sportsmanship were the order of the day as each team played their round robin games before fiercly contesting the finals. The awards for the days Best Batsman went to Jeremy Fernando of Merimbula, whilst Best Bowling also went to Merimbula’s Jacob Ramsay. Robert Hearn was awarded the player of the tournament collecting over 200 runs and a number of wickets with an outstanding display of cricketing talent.
The cricket action returns next weekend after rain interrupted matches last Saturday with normal fixtures across the Monaro as well as the over 35’s six a side cricket competition hosted by the Cooma Hotel on Sunday and of course the final of the KFC “Clash of the Codes” 20/20 cricket final Friday week 4th February from 6pm under lights at Rotary Oval. The MDCA would like to thank all the teams for taking part and acknowledge its supporting partners, KFC, Cooma Ex-Services Club, Australian Hotel, Dodds Hotel as well as Umpire Chris Philbrick.
