terrific cricket to make the final but it was the STC Puma's from Canberra who
were eventual 2013 champions with Cooma's own James Taylor proving he hasn't
lost his touch with an outstanding 50* in the final to get them over the line.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Hi
folks just a note to confirm that we have rescheduled the Monaro District
Cricket Association Six a side tournament to this coming Sunday 3rd February.
Apologies to all it inconvenienced on the weekend but the weather last Saturday
and Sunday made the grounds unavailable so we’ve just moved it back a week.
Most teams have indicated they are still keen and in fact without it being a
long weekend and with a big weekend of cricket in Cooma we might get a few
extra teams than what we might of last Sunday anyway. The venue and times and
format all still stay the same.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">If
you could drop me a note or text to confirm your teams availability and
registration that would be much appreciated and we look forward to seeing you
on the weekend.

Jindabyne Cricket Club claimed their first A grade premiership title on the weekend romping to a 133 run win against Coffey’s Cricket Club. The win caps off a stellar season for Jindabyne who took out the minor premiership of the Monaro District Cricket Association competition.

Jindabyne went into the grand final against Coffey’s at Rotary Oval on Saturday as favourites and did not disappoint. Coffey’s won the toss and sent Jindabyne in to bat first on a good wicket and set a very competitive total of 200 runs. Luke Hayes and Steggles Fitzgerald started slowly for Jindy in the face of some tight bowling from Sommerville who stuck to a tight line and extracted impressive movement off the deck and through the air.

Coffey’s bowler Hayden was the first to break through removing Fitzgerald for eight in the fifth over. Hayes was the next to go off the bowling of Sommerville for seven followed by Shortland who was out on a duck leaving Jindy struggling at three for 37. Dunn fell soon after on 22 having played a lone hand in the top order. Mick Bottom then set about resurrecting a precariously placed Jindy innings.

Joined at the crease by Lowe (8), the pair put on 37 for the fifth wicket before Lowe fell in the 22nd over. Oliver then joined Bottom and with some big hitting put on 55 runs in eight overs before being bowled for 40.

Bottom continued to bat well and with excellent support from Williamson who put on 29 took the score to 166 before being caught for an excellent innings of 59. Williamson continued to bat well and with support from O’Brien and Hind saw the overs out, taking the total to 200.

Coffey’s started slowly with Hind causing both openers a lot of trouble but it was Oliver who made the initial breakthrough removing Moon to a sharp catch by Lowe. Hind then removed Fitzgerald next over for a duck.

Coffey’s were two for 11 after eight overs. Sommerville joined Nicholls at the crease and the two hung in for five overs before Akkersdyk was brought into the attack. With some excellent swing bowling he tore through the batting taking five for 26 off eight overs in his best spell of the season. Waller took three for 19 cleaning up the tail to have Coffey’s all out for 67.Stuart Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02292490415978013184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-266495653094243990.post-16644081482077450352012-01-30T15:45:00.000-08:002012-01-30T15:45:27.260-08:00Knights take six a side crown

Cooma Monaro Express 31/1/12

In a terrific day of cricket action on Sunday, the Merimbula Knights team walked away with the 2012 MDCA six-a-side trophy turning the tables on last year’s champions Berridale. The Merimbula Knights team captained by Jeremy Fernando, went through to the finals just on percentage as the highest placed losing team, however they played terrific cricket in the two finals to secure their well deserved victory. With 13 teams competing and a healthy crowd of family and friends watching on the cricket action was fast and furious as fours and sixes were hit and wickets fell at a cracking pace throughout the day.

Highlights of the day included some strong junior performances from the Merimbula Knights and, the Berridale Post Young Guns including taking out the long distance throwing and junior sprint competitions. The day saw local Daniel Jacobs regain his title in the seniors MDCA sprint after the first final finished in a three way dead heat.

Earlier in the day the highly fancied Jindabyne were upset by Michael Lehrman’s Custard Arms team and Wolfies Wobblers upset the CSG team led by Zac Smith. Sam Williams was terrific with bat and ball for the Lime Milkshakes team whilst the Expats team led by Brendon Geeves were unlucky to just miss out on a place in the finals on percentage run rate differential
.
Some big hitting, tight bowling and good sportsmanship were the order of the day as each team played their round robin games before fiercly contesting the finals. The awards for the day’s best batsman went to Michael Lehman, whilst best bowling also went to Sam Williams. Ben Hearn was awarded the player of the tournament collecting plenty of runs and a number of wickets.
Cooma Monaro Express 20/10/11
The next generation of Australian cricketers will this month take their first steps towards the Baggy Green, as boys and girls in Cooma, Berridale and Jindabyne join their local MILO in2CRICKET centre.
MILO in2CRICKET was successfully launched in 2008, and the program for children aged 5-10 years old promises to be bigger and better in 2011-12, with three cricket clubs offering the program to boys and girls in the Monaro district.
With a new generation of players coming through in both the men’s and women’s teams at international level, a sharp focus is being put on encouraging the next generation of cricket heroes through the ranks – and MILO in2CRICKET is the natural starting point.
Southern and Illawarra Participation and Growth Officer Kezia Okulicz is excited about how the MILO in2CRICKET program can develop cricket in the Monaro area.
“The launch of the new MILO in2CRICKET program in 2008 created a lot of interest in cricket in the Monaro area. We hope to continue to build on that success this season and help all girls and boys in Monaro have a positive first experience with Australia’s favourite sport,” she said.
The following clubs will this season be conducting MILO in2CRICKET program through the cricket season, Cooma. Berridale and Jindabyne. For more information please call Kezia Okulicz on 0416 488 141 or see www.in2CRICKET.com.auStuart Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02292490415978013184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-266495653094243990.post-61396443324705222262011-10-06T17:22:00.000-07:002011-10-06T21:08:31.487-07:00Big year ahead for Monaro Cricketers

A massive year of cricket on the Monaro gets under way this weekend when the season proper begins with a 45 over one day match.

This season will bring more T20 games and a Grand Final for the two leading T20 teams an exciting and popular brand of cricket played over 20 overs with the emphasis on scoring runs and scoring them quickly.

Representative cricket returns to the Monaro in two weeks time when Monaro host the Far South Coast in what is always a fiercely battled contest. Monaro will also be entering a team in ACT Crickets Konica cup a T20 competition with teams entering from all over the ACT and NSW, With the Monaro team having played its fair share of T20 cricket in the last few seasons it should see some good results.

Next month sees the return of Town vs Country when the Cooma locals take on the rest of the Monaro - it will be played under lights and following the T20 format.

The very successful Battle of the Codes will return in December with Rugby League taking on AFL on Friday December 2 in what will become a traditional way to start the big weekend of the Cooma races.

In a first for the Monaro there will be a super 8 comp which to sum it up is organised backyard cricket, Super 8s will be run throughout summer and will be played all over the Monaro in a fun family friendly environment all dates and venues are listed on the website http://monarocricket.blogspot.com /p/match-reports.html

In this week’s matches Berridale will be hosting the Cooma Cats in a replay of last year’s B Grade grand final. Both teams have recruited strongly over the winter and both teams will be looking to improve on last year’s performance. They will really push to make A Grade- Berridale’s captain coach Andrew O’Keeffe, last year’s player of the year, again the player to watch with both bat and ball.

If the Cooma Cats are to make a big impact on this year’s competition Damian Asanovski will be the one to show them how it’s done.

Jindabyne will be hosting Royal and with the return of Luke Hayes and Craig Dixon, Jindabyne will again be one of the real heavyweights of the competition.

For the Royal underrated leg spinner Fergus McCosker, if available for every match, could be a real chance of taking out top honours with the ball. Coffeys Colts, last year’s A grade runners up, will be hosting Coffeys at Snowy Oval, They are both very strong teams - a real youth vs experience match.
The Colts will be looking to Campbell Hillman to back up his efforts of leading run scorer to keep the Colts up as the team to beat this season, Coffeys will be looking to the wily off spin of Mark Williams to keep them in the top grade this year.

Aussie will lose key players Locky Schofield and Sam Williams for large parts of the season and will rely heavily on Ben Shaw to post big scores to keep them in the race. If the Aussie manage to get all the big guns available for the finals a hatrick of a grade premierships is not out of the question.
President of the Monaro District Cricket Association Ben Hearn said he was aiming to make cricket on the Monaro more family friendly and a more professional outfit.

Some of the changes to take place will be that only one day cricket will be played with exciting 20/20 matches to be also played throughout the competition. The MDCA will also be represented in Country Plate, Jeffries Cup and U16/U12 representative fixtures as well as having a Monaro team in the ACT Konica Cup 20/20 competition for the first time. The association will continue to offer the Clash of the codes 20/20 tournament involving Rugby League, Rugby Union, AFL and Soccer. In addition the MDCA will be hosting a club based Super 8's and super 6's competition with shortened formats of the game that will offer opportunities for all ages to have a go at cricket. Finally junior intra school cricket competitions have been re-established and the Milo In2Cricket program expanded beyond Cooma to Bombala, Berridale and Jindabyne.Stuart Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02292490415978013184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-266495653094243990.post-39925147102258399502011-01-31T19:28:00.000-08:002011-02-28T14:32:35.422-08:0020/20 KFC Cooma "Clash of the Codes" Final - Tigers Champions

Cooma Tigers vs Cooma Stallions 25/2/11 Rotary Oval

The tigers won the toss and elected to bat under wonderful conditions. The openers G Van Der Plaat (45) and Iain Elliot (68) set the tone from the first ball with Van Der Plaat smashing the first ball of the day for 4. The two batsman took apart the stallions bowlers despatching regular boundaries including several big 6's. The introduction of C Hillman (3-31) into the attack saw the breakthrough on the score of 89 in only the 9th over. Hillman and D Smith (0-25) managed to slow down the run rate ever so briefly- Elliot picked up his run rate and bought up his 50 with a lovely cut for 4 with the Stallions starting to rue a couple of early missed chances as the run rate closed in on an alarming 9 an over. Elliot dismissed in only the 15th over for a well made 68. The Tigers
middle order while not as devestating as the top order kept ticking the runs over and after 20 overs the Tigers made a very imposing 4/163.

The Stallions were going to need a big start from N Moon and S Dunn if they stood any chance of chasing down the Tigers large score. In the twilight the Stallions found batting very difficult against the Tigers N Moon bowled in the 3rd over bought Wolf to the crease, Wolf and Dunn worked hard at the crease but found it very difficult to hit boundaries. The running between the wickets was just keeping them in the game and as is often the case in 20/20 just as things looked like turning for the Stallions both batsman fell in consecutive balls to the bowling of Kuhn (2-10). The Stallions never recovered as wickets continued to fall as the run rate require blew out to well over 10 an over. L Redmond chief destroyer with (3-20). The match finished in only the 14th over when Jarred Tonini pulled off a classic catch at covers. The Tigers were awarded the inagural KFC clash of the codes shield. Iain Elliot awarded the Aussie hotel player of the match.Stuart Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02292490415978013184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-266495653094243990.post-41083681094370483972010-12-22T16:18:00.000-08:002011-01-23T19:26:34.652-08:00Australia Day 6 a side Results

6 a side Cricket - Sunday 23rd January 2010

Berridale’s Aussie Patriots triumph in 2011 MDCA 6 a side Cricket

In a terrific day of cricket action on the Monaro last Sunday, the Aussie Patriots team from Berridale walked away with the 2011 MDCA 6 a side trophy. The Aussie Patriots team captained by Simon Freebody, went through the day undefeated toppling the Merimbula Knights in a tightly contested final. In front of the 12 teams and a healthy crowd of family and friends the Patriots secured victory keeping the trophy firmly in the Monaro Region for another year.

Highlights of the day included some strong junior performances from the Merimbula Knights under 18’s, the Berridale Post Young Guns and Cooma’s own Backyard Boys with great bowling from D.Swain and Z.Saddler in particular. The day even saw the reintroduction of the MDCA Australia Day sprint which was a lot of fun with kids and spectators joining in. In the seniors sides competition the highly fancied Toyota Cup All Stars struggled against the likes of the Patriots and Wolfies Wobblers whilst in the other division the Merimbula Knights first grade and the Sorry About That team had two wins apiece and had to be split on run rate differential.

Some big hitting, tight bowling and good sportsmanship were the order of the day as each team played their round robin games before fiercly contesting the finals. The awards for the days Best Batsman went to Jeremy Fernando of Merimbula, whilst Best Bowling also went to Merimbula’s Jacob Ramsay. Robert Hearn was awarded the player of the tournament collecting over 200 runs and a number of wickets with an outstanding display of cricketing talent.

The cricket action returns next weekend after rain interrupted matches last Saturday with normal fixtures across the Monaro as well as the over 35’s six a side cricket competition hosted by the Cooma Hotel on Sunday and of course the final of the KFC “Clash of the Codes” 20/20 cricket final Friday week 4th February from 6pm under lights at Rotary Oval. The MDCA would like to thank all the teams for taking part and acknowledge its supporting partners, KFC, Cooma Ex-Services Club, Australian Hotel, Dodds Hotel as well as Umpire Chris Philbrick.Stuart Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02292490415978013184noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-266495653094243990.post-33626039248331815132010-12-13T20:11:00.000-08:002011-01-03T20:51:33.580-08:00KFC Cooma "Clash of the Codes" 20/20Tigers Win in Super Over
21/12/10
With the black eyed peas- "I gotta Feeling" blaring out across Rotary as the Cooma Tigers took to the field little did we know how good tonight really was going to be. The Cooma cats won the toss and elected to bat under wonderful conditions. The Cats got off to a shaky start loosing 2 crucial wickets in the 3rd over to quick bowler Steve Murphy (2/24). At 2/14 after 3 overs D Azanovski (29) and W Gowland (24) set about getting the Cats into a handy position and with a couple of big overs the Cats were in a position to post a handy score, Wickets fell at regular intervals but so did the boundaries, The middle order and tail all fired posting many sixesto all parts of the field. All bowlers came in for a bit of stick best of the Tigers bowlers was I Elliot with 3/19. After 20 overs The Cats posted a very good score of 150.

The Tigers set the tone for the chase with the first ball from C Harmer being smashed to the boundry of the bat of G Van der Plaat (9). Harmer stuck to his line and was rewarded in the last ball of the 1st over removing the middle stump of the dangerous Van der Plaat. The early loss of Van Der Plaat didn’t slow down the Tigers and the runs continued to flow at a great rate, Murphy (24) and C Jenkins (55) showed you didn’t need to slog to score quickly with some incredible running between the wickets. With the help of some sloppy fielding from the Cats, the Tigers were increasing there run rate every over. The loss of Murphy didn’t slow down the Tigers. Elliot (26) and C Jenkins continued to dominate the Cats bowlers as the boundaries started to flow at regular intervals. At 2/76 off 9 overs the Tigers were starting to take the game away from the Cats. Gowland (1/21) was bought back on to bowl and got the vital break through dismising I Elliot. Chris Jenkins was joined by older brother Andrew (17) and the pairs running between the wickets was something to behold turning 1'sinto 2's and taking the fielders arm on more then one occasion. At 3/135 with 4 overs to go the Tigers looked home and hosed. D Azanovski (1/22) in his final over got the break through dismising A Jenkins. With the Tigers tail looking a little
inexperienced, C Jenkins tried to lift the tempo but went for one big hit too many with Stu Wood (1/25) removing his off stump. C Jenkins received a standing ovation from the 75+ strong crowd. With 9 runs required from 12 balls some tight bowling was required and Corey Harmer and Stu Wood delivered restricting the Tigers batsman it all came down to the Tigers needing 2 off the last ball. Schoon missed the ball but they managed to scramble a bye as the keeper was standing back making it a TIE!!! sending the game to a Super Over.

The Tigers batted 1st in the Super over with Jenkins and Murphy putting on 11 off the W Gowland over. The Super over for the cats lasted 3 balls with A Jenkins picking up Gowland with a great catch on the boundry and Azanovski being bowled. The Tigers eventual winners in what will be remembered as one of the best games
THE Stallions Rugby League Club clinched victory over the Red Devils Rugby Union Club on the cricket pitch when the traditional rivals went head to head in the Monaro’s first 20/20 clash of the codes match played on Friday night.

The Stallions dominated from the beginning, winning the toss and electing to bat. Opening batsmen Steve Dunn set the pace of the match hitting 18 off the first over which included two sixes over mid on. Dunn went on to make an impressive score of 71. In the fifth over, with the score at two for 31, Dunn was joined at the crease by middle order batsmen Tim Williams. The pair dominated the Red Devils bowlers hitting a number of boundaries to all parts of the field in the true style of the 20/20 format of cricket. They went on to score 114 off 60 balls in what was considered an awe-inspiring partnership. The partnership put the Stallions in a dominant position, posting a final score of 192.

The Red Devils got off to a solid start with Jimmy Nichols and Damo Roach posting an opening partnership of 50. With a strong Stallions bowling attack and the wicket wearing the batting order crumbled. The Devils were all out for 105 in just the 16th over.
THE Cooma Red Devils rugby union team will take on the Cooma Stallions rugby league side on Friday night in the Monaro’s very first 20/20 clash of the codes cricket match.

The match, which was scheduled for last Friday, was postponed due to wet weather. With forecasts predicting more wet weather today and tomorrow, event organisers have their fingers crossed the rain will hold off.

The exhibition match will be the first of its kind on the Monaro and places the regions four major sporting codes against one another. Football players from four different codes- AFL, soccer, league and union- will trade their balls and jerseys for cricket bats in what is anticipated to be a fun and exciting game. Players from each team will be looking to entertain the crowd with some big sixes and quick running between wickets in the tradition of the 20/20 format of cricket.

While most of the players on each team play in the regular cricket competition on the weekend, the one week delay would be welcome for those who were looking to get in some extra bowling and batting practice before the big game.
When the Express spoke to players from each team in the lead up to the game last week, Red Devils player Ned Jeffries said it had been two years since he had played cricket competitively and he was hoping to get in the nets for some much needed practice.

He predicted the Cooma Stallions would have a slight advantage over the Devils. The Cooma Cats Australian Football Club and the Cooma Tigers Soccer Club will go head to head on December 17 and the final will be decided in the new year on February 4.
This year KFC will be challenging clubs from all over Australia to compete for cash mid-innings during the KFC Big Bash at the SCG. To be in with a chance, keen clubs can head to KFC.com.au and explain in 25 words or less why their cricket club is the best in Australia.
Cricket in this country forms the heart of many communities, bringing people together in sport and fun. Community cricket is the breeding ground for the future generations of cricketing excellence and is every bit as important as the club and national level game. KFC is committed to supporting and rewarding fans and players at all levels of cricket.”
