Super 8's

MDCA Super 8's

In 2011/12 the Monaro District Cricket Association invites local cricket clubs to participate in the inaugural MDCA Super 8’s Cricket Tournament as part of season 2011/12. The Super 8’s are an initiative of the MDCA to promote the game and development of cricket in the region. The competition will promote opportunities in cricket for all ages and abilities from elite cricket to junior cricket. With up to 32 teams and 256 players participating this promises to be a fun inclusive competition with plenty of cricket action.

Super 8’s Competition Format

Games will be only 45mins per innings with 8 people per team. Games will be for the same amount of overs per side. Eg. If side A bowls 10 overs in 45mins side B will have a maximum of 10 overs in their innings. This will mean there will be 2 games involving 4 teams per club per evening. People can interchange teams in pool rounds but may only play for one team in finals. Games will be played under lights in twilight conditions (except Berridale/Bombala) umpired by MDCA representatives. Volunteer helpers are more than welcome. Restricted Bowling (6 step run up) and Batting (retire at 20) will apply. Bowlers will bowl from the same end to speed up games and 2 runs will apply for wides/no balls in all but final overs. No LBW decisions will be given and underarm bowling that bounces once will be allowed. Clubs can provide commentators and music to go with the family friendly participation atmosphere. However No unacceptable language or behaviour will be tolerated.

Super 8’s Background

Over the last couple of years the MDCA has launched a number of initiatives aimed at redressing the declining numbers of cricketers progressing through the development pathway to senior cricket. Changes to the format of the MCDA competition as well as Milo In2Cricket, 20/20 Cricket, Clash of the Codes Competition, Intra-school Cricket, In2Cricket Gala Days, Australia Day Super 6’s, Masters Cricket, Konica Cup Division 3 and Southern Zone Regional Representation are some of these initiatives aimed at increasing our participation numbers and securing the future and development of cricketers from the region. The Monaro Region actually has a rich cricketing history having had international teams visit and representatives playing in the region for over 100 years, but this is no future guarantee if we don’t foster inclusiveness, particularly in junior development and grow the game.

The introduction of the Super 8’s concept by the association and its supportive member clubs, aims to address modern societies changing attitudes towards community participation by allowing time-poor adults to engage with opportunity starved youngsters in an exciting, healthy supportive club cricketing environment. The successes of Milo In2Cricket, 6aside summer soccer, 6 aside cricket, last summer’s masters cricket fundraiser and 20/20 cricket prove that this medium will interest non-traditional cricket supporters and hopefully re-engage them in our cricketing family environment. Please encourage all members of the community to come along and participate or show their support for this vital initiative for the future of cricket in the region.
