Knights take six a side crown

Cooma Monaro Express 31/1/12

In a terrific day of cricket action on Sunday, the Merimbula Knights team walked away with the 2012 MDCA six-a-side trophy turning the tables on last year’s champions Berridale. The Merimbula Knights team captained by Jeremy Fernando, went through to the finals just on percentage as the highest placed losing team, however they played terrific cricket in the two finals to secure their well deserved victory. With 13 teams competing and a healthy crowd of family and friends watching on the cricket action was fast and furious as fours and sixes were hit and wickets fell at a cracking pace throughout the day.

Highlights of the day included some strong junior performances from the Merimbula Knights and, the Berridale Post Young Guns including taking out the long distance throwing and junior sprint competitions. The day saw local Daniel Jacobs regain his title in the seniors MDCA sprint after the first final finished in a three way dead heat.

Earlier in the day the highly fancied Jindabyne were upset by Michael Lehrman’s Custard Arms team and Wolfies Wobblers upset the CSG team led by Zac Smith. Sam Williams was terrific with bat and ball for the Lime Milkshakes team whilst the Expats team led by Brendon Geeves were unlucky to just miss out on a place in the finals on percentage run rate differential
.
Some big hitting, tight bowling and good sportsmanship were the order of the day as each team played their round robin games before fiercly contesting the finals. The awards for the day’s best batsman went to Michael Lehman, whilst best bowling also went to Sam Williams. Ben Hearn was awarded the player of the tournament collecting plenty of runs and a number of wickets.

The cricket action returns this weekend with normal fixtures across the Monaro as well as the quarter finals of the MDCA Super 8’s cricket competition at Snowy Oval this Tuesday and Thursday evening. The MDCA would like to thank all the teams for taking part and acknowledge its supporting partners, BDM, Saphire Coast Physiotherapy, Cooma Monaro Shire Council, Capital Dial a Pizza, Commonwealth Bank, Cooma Hotel, Coffeys Hotel, Alpine Hotel, Australian Hotel, Berridale Post Office and Berridale Real Estate.
