The Monaro District Cricket Association hosted their annual six-a-side
cricket tournament on the weekend and used the tournament as a fundraiser for
Ricky and Rhianna Ponting's charitable Foundation "Biggest Game of
Cricket" for kids with Cancer.
More than $1000 was raised on the day and at last weekend's players
poker tournament which will go to supporting families in their time of need.
Alex Bruce, Jack Parkin, Ben
Hearn (captain), Sam Burgess, Adam Walters and Jake Riley (kneeling) make up
the Berridale White Tales cricket team.
Many thanks to all the players who played in the tournaments and dug
deep and a special thanks to Commonwealth Bank, Woolworths Cooma and especially
Rhianna's grandfather Bill Rushton who came along and tossed the coin to kick
off proceedings and donated a signed pair of Ricky's gloves to raffle on the day.
Ricky Ponting's
grandfather-in-law and local identity Bill Rushton is ready to toss the special
coin to start the six-a-side competition on Nijong oval. He is with team
captains Ben Hales and Ben Hearne and organiser Stuart Wood.
With the tournament having to be postponed a week due to last weekend's
poor weather it was a slightly smaller field than normal with sides from
Canberra, Merimbula and Berridale competing for the title of six a side
champions for 2013. The Merimbula Knights as defending champions played
terrific cricket to make the final but it was the STC Puma's from Canberra who
were eventual 2013 champions with Cooma's own James Taylor proving he hasn't
lost his touch with an outstanding 50* in the final to get them over the line.
Canberra's Southside Teachers'
Cricket Club Pumas captain Brendan Geeves, James Taylor, Rowan Venables, Steve
Jobson with Niven Turner and Matt Williams won the competition.
JT took out the Best Batsman
award with another Cooma local Brendan Geeves taking out player of the
tournament and Michalego's Matt Williams named as best bowler. Special mention
goes to the Berridale Young Guns who proved they can mix it with the big boys
and putting a few sixes over the boundary to show they will be a team to watch
out for in the future.
Bill
Rushton, grandfather-in law to famous cricketer Ricky Ponting sits with some
items to be auctioned to raise funds for the Ricky Ponting Kids with Cancer

sporting hero Ponting.
